Weekend in Paris - Day Two

Pere Lachaise

Arc de Triumph

My second day in Paris was physically and visually exhausting. I awoke at 7am and spent the day running around the city, jumping on and off the metro many times. The result, of course, was that I managed to fit in everything I wanted to, and I became quite the expert at using the metro.

My first stop was the famous cemetery, Pere Lachaise. This is the place where famous musicians and celebrities such as Oscar Wilde were buried. And I can see why, it is the most incredible cemetery I've ever seen.  It was so beautiful with the tall, bare trees littering their golden leaves on the pathways, and the airy silence made it so serene. I spent about 2 hours just walking around and getting lost. I'm afraid to say that I didn't manage to find any burial sites of the celebrities, but if you saw the sheer vastness of the place you'd understand why.

Next stop was the Catacombes. Took me much longer to find than necessary due to the entrance being so poorly sign posted, and my poor vision (maybe time I actually wear my glasses). Didn't manage to take any photos, however they wouldn't have done them any justice anyway. It was fascinating that someone had put so much effort into arranging these human bones so perfectly, and a little bit creepy.
So, after my fairly morbid morning I headed towards the Louvre. I only managed to see the Egyptian part and the Mona Lisa. If you plan on going to the Louvre and have more time, I recommend going on two separate days. It's too tiring to try see everything and actually still be interested in it all.

Last stop of the day was Arc de Triumph. It was amazing, I didn't realise how large it actually was! I only admired it from a far, as I couldn't figure out how people managed to get to it, apart from dashing across the busy traffic. I have been informed now that there are underground pathways. Doh!

To complete my final day in Paris I found a French restaurant and enjoyed a slightly bloody medium steak frites. Was disappointed escargos weren't on the menu, but maybe next time.
It was so nice to get out of England and travel. My feet are itchy again though. Wonder where my next stop will be?
